How GBP Ownership Transfer Works

Understanding the process of transferring Google Business Profile ownership—when it's needed, how it works, and what to expect.

Sometimes you need to transfer ownership of a Google Business Profile—whether you’re taking over from a previous owner, a former employee, or an old marketing agency. Here’s how the process works.

When Ownership Transfer Is Needed

Common scenarios:

  • Business purchase – You bought a business and need the listing
  • Former employee – An ex-employee created/owns the profile
  • Previous agency – Old marketing company still controls your listing
  • Personal to business account – Moving from personal Gmail to business account
  • Partner departure – Business partner who owned the listing left

The Two Transfer Methods

Method 1: Direct Transfer (Easiest)

If the current owner is cooperative:

  1. Current owner adds you as an Owner (not Manager)
  2. You accept the invitation
  3. Current owner removes themselves (optional)

Timeline: Immediate once invitation is accepted

This is the fastest and cleanest method when possible. See Google’s guide on transferring primary ownership.

Method 2: Ownership Request (When Owner Won’t Help)

If you can’t reach the current owner or they won’t transfer:

  1. Go to business.google.com/add
  2. Enter your business name and address
  3. Select your business from the results
  4. Click Request Access
  5. Fill out the form and submit
  6. The current owner has 3 days to respond
  7. If no response, you may be able to claim the profile

Timeline: 3-7 days typically

See Google’s official guide: Request ownership of a Business Profile

Step-by-Step: Requesting Ownership

Step 1: Go to Google Business

Visit business.google.com/add and sign in with your Google account.

Step 2: Find Your Business

Enter your business name and address. Select your business from the search results.

Step 3: Request Access

You’ll see a message indicating someone else manages this profile. Click Request Access.

Step 4: Fill Out the Form

Provide:

  • Your name and role at the business
  • Phone number where Google can reach you
  • Email address

Step 5: Submit and Wait

After submitting:

  • You’ll receive a confirmation email
  • The current owner is notified
  • They have 3 days to respond
  • Check your request status via the link in your confirmation email

Step 6: Complete Verification

If approved (or if no response after 3 days), you may need to verify ownership through:

  • Video verification
  • Phone call
  • Postcard
  • Email

What Happens to the Old Owner

When ownership transfers:

  • If they approved: They can choose to remain as Manager or be removed
  • If they didn’t respond: They lose all access after the waiting period
  • If they denied: You’ll receive a rejection email (see below)

The previous owner receives notification of the transfer.

Special Situations

Service-Area Businesses

For businesses without a physical location, the standard request process may not work. Contact Google Business support and select “Transfer ownership of listing” as your issue.

Multiple Locations

Each location must be transferred separately. There’s no bulk transfer option.

Agency-Managed Profiles

If an agency owns your profiles:

  1. Request they add you as Owner first
  2. Then remove their access
  3. If they refuse, use the ownership request process

Suspended Profiles

You cannot transfer ownership of a suspended profile. The suspension must be resolved first.

How Long Does It Take?

ScenarioTimeline
Direct transfer (cooperative owner)Immediate
Ownership request (no response)3 days
Ownership request (disputed)7-14 days
With verification requiredAdd 3-7 days

Tips for Smooth Transfers

Document Everything

  • Screenshot current profile state
  • Note current owner’s email if known
  • Save any communication

Use a Business Email

When requesting access, use an email matching your business domain (e.g., you@yourbusiness.com). This strengthens your claim.

Be Ready to Verify

Have these ready:

  • Business documents (license, registration)
  • Utility bill showing address
  • Ability to receive calls at business number

Don’t Create a Duplicate

Never create a new listing while trying to claim an existing one. This creates conflicts and can hurt your SEO.

After the Transfer

Once you have ownership:

  1. Update profile info – Make sure everything is accurate
  2. Add managers – Give access to those who need it (the email will be on your onboarding form)
  3. Review user list – Remove anyone who shouldn’t have access
  4. Check for issues – Look for incorrect info that needs fixing

Common Problems

“Request denied”

The current owner actively denied your request. Options:

  • Contact them directly to resolve
  • Gather additional documentation proving your connection to the business
  • Contact Google Business support for assistance

“This business is already verified”

This means someone has claimed it. Use the ownership request process at business.google.com/add.

Can’t find “Request Access” option

  • Make sure you’re signed into a Google account
  • Try a different browser or incognito mode
  • The option may not appear if you’re signed into multiple accounts
